Six hours descending a private river canyon on the south side of El Yunque. Cliff jumps, body rafting through whirlpools, natural rock slides, and cable-assisted climbs up the rock. Every section is optional. Ages 10 and up, good fitness required, maximum 12.
Essential Details
A paved trail and one swimming hole is not canyoning. This is.
On your ownMost El Yunque adventure tours are a paved path, a lookout, and one pool you share with a bus.
The canyon worth descending is on private land with no public access and no way to scout it from the road.
The river rewrites itself after every storm. A jump that was fine Tuesday is not fine Thursday.
Cliff jumps, whirlpools and cable sections need helmets, vests, harness points and someone who has read the water that morning.
Nobody does this alone and comes back with a good story.
Helmet, life jacket and a local guide who decides which jump, slide and climb runs today, then walks you through each one.
You set your own level. Every jump is optional, every climb has a walk-around, nobody is shamed into anything.
Body rafting: you float the rapids on your back in your vest, feet first, and the river does the work.
Cable climbs: short via ferrata sections, steel cables bolted to the rock that you clip into with the guide beside you.
Every route on this site is walked by us before it goes live. This is the one we send people to when Charco El Hippie was not enough.
Every tier includes the same guide, gear and route. The difference is who does the driving.
Drive yourself to the trailhead. Exact meeting point and parking in your confirmation. 9:00 AM start.
Meet your driver at Farmacia Caridad in Fajardo at 8:00 AM. Covers Rio Grande, Luquillo and Fajardo stays.
Hotel lobby pickup at 7:00 AM anywhere in the San Juan metro. You sleep in the car both ways if you want.
Not sure which? Message Us.
Reads the water that morning and sets the jump heights, the slide lines and the climb. You never guess.
IncludedBody rafting and whirlpools are a float, not a swim. No swimming experience needed to float; good fitness needed to climb out.
IncludedFixed steel cables and rungs you clip into for the steep sections, with a walk-around for anyone who wants it.
IncludedOne group at a time, no bus on the rocks, no line at the jump.
IncludedSix hours in the canyon and the mountain road is somebody else's problem. The morning starts with a local bakery stop.
IncludedTostones and pollo frito, served after the tour. You come off the canyon hungry.
IncludedSelf-drive, Fajardo meetup or San Juan pickup. Ages 10 and up, max 12.
Your driver is in the lobby.
Farmacia Caridad #39. Self-drive guests meet us at the trailhead by 8:45.
Puerto Rican coffee and fresh pastries before the trailhead. Pickup tiers only; you order what you like.
Helmets, vests, the briefing. Then the footpath the Taíno walked, down to the river.
The canyon opens with the long rock slide. By the bottom of it the group has stopped being polite with each other.
Your guide sets two or three heights off the ledges. Take the one you want. The walk-around is right there.
On your back, feet first, vest doing the work. The rapids spit you into the pool below.
Clip into the steel cable and climb the rock beside the water. Conditions permitting, you cross the canyon on a line strung above the river.
Change, then tostones and pollo frito. The long exhale.
Back where we picked you up, Fajardo first, then San Juan.
Free 24-hour cancellation. Small guided groups.
Message us your date, group size and pickup option. We confirm your spot and send the meeting details.
Contact Us to BookFit enough for six hours of hiking on wet rock, swimming across pools, climbing out of them, and clipping into cable on the steep sections. You do not need to be an athlete, and every hard section has a walk-around, but a sedentary group will struggle. Message us if you are unsure and describe your group honestly.
Yes. Your guide sets two or three heights and you take the one you want or none at all. The walk-around is beside every jump and nobody is pressured.
Floating the rapids on your back, feet first, in your life jacket, with the river carrying you into the pool below. No board, no raft, no paddle. The guide picks the lines and goes first.
Short via ferrata sections: steel cables and rungs fixed to the rock that you clip into with a harness while you climb beside the water. If you want the full climb, book the Via Ferrata tour; here they are a few steep sections on the way up the canyon.
No. The line crossing above the river runs only when water level and weather allow, and your guide makes that call on the day. Everything else on the route runs rain or shine unless the river is unsafe.
10, and under-18s must be with a parent or guardian. A fit 10-year-old who is comfortable in water does fine; a nervous one should start with the Multi-Waterfall Hike instead.
You need to be comfortable in deep water. The vest floats you through the whirlpools and body rafting, and the guide swims beside you, but you will cross pools where you cannot stand.
Charco El Hippie Adventure Expedition is a full day with rapids, the petroglyph walk and the Malecón lunch on a public-access river, from $129. Canyoning is six hours on a private canyon with cliff jumps, body rafting and cable climbs, from $189, and it is harder. Pick canyoning if you have already done Charco, or if Charco sounded too easy.
Canyoning is a water day with a few cable sections. The Via Ferrata is a climbing day: cables, ladders and bridges up a rock face, ages 15 and up, with the river as the backdrop rather than the route. Fit groups who have two days book both.
Short rain changes nothing. After heavy rain the guide skips or reorders sections, the line crossing is dropped, and jump heights come down. If the river is unsafe to enter at all, we move you to another date or tour at no charge.
Swimsuit under quick-dry clothes you can climb in, and closed-toe shoes with laces and grip that you do not mind soaking. Flip-flops and Crocs are not allowed. Bring a backpack that sits on both shoulders because your hands are busy all day.
Maximum 12 per departure, one guide per group. We need a minimum of 2 to run. If a minimum is not met we contact you in advance and reschedule together.
The rainforest is one day. Add the glowing bay, the reef, an island or a cacao farm.
Glowing water after dark in Fajardo. The classic evening after a day on the river. From $85.
Boat to Cayo Icacos for reef, turtles and tropical fish. Gear included, first-timers welcome. From $109.
Flamenco Beach and Culebrita Island in one day, ferry tickets handled. From $160.
Cliff jumps, body rafting, slides and cable climbs on a private El Yunque canyon. Ages 10 and up. From $189.
